We recently followed up with Marie at DWP Warrington who completed the Manchester Half Marathon in May raising money for the Charity for Civil Servants.
Marie completes the Manchester Half Marathon

Marie, you completely smashed your fundraising target and raised almost £500 for the Charity. We have loved being part of your fundraising journey. What do all these donations mean to you and what would you like to say to your supporters?
I had set a low fundraising target as I really didn’t think I’d get to that amount, but I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by everyone’s support and generosity. Thank you to everybody who donated to me for the Charity. Those amazing kind messages of support really meant a lot to me and helped me so much to get through this run.
Leading up to your half marathon, did you face any challenges? What kept you motivated?
The main challenge for me was just getting out of the door and doing the training really. Once I booked the event back in February, the training has constantly been on my mind. I’ve been building up to the event whilst juggling a busy family life, looking after my children and working.
Everybody – all my friends, family and the Charity’s support – has kept me motivated throughout the training and I couldn’t have done it without them. I was focussed on crossing that finishing line on the big day and knowing I had all this support kept me going.
What was the highlight of your half marathon and would you do it again?
The actual event was the amazing highlight. All the supporters on the day were great, cheering us runners and they kept me motivated all day. I absolutely loved it! And yes, I will definitely be doing another half marathon in Warrington. I’ve already booked it for September!
What would you say to someone who has never run before and was thinking of supporting the Charity? What would your advice be?
Just go for it! If it’s something you’ve wanted to do, just put a plan in place or follow the Couch to 5K and start there. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and just enjoy the experience. Go for it and know you can do it. You’ll keep going and you’ll achieve it in the end. Also, raising money for the Charity definitely keeps you motivated. I would highly recommend it to anyone – just give it a go!
Thank you Marie for being so incredible and raising money for the Charity for Civil Servants by taking on this epic running event.
