World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September reminds us of the importance of being brave enough to ask someone how they are and really mean it. We may have to ask directly about thoughts of suicide if they say something that makes us feel worried. We may have to be brave enough to stay with them and listen without judgement while they talk. This can ultimately save a life.

It is a myth that talking about suicide will put the idea into someone’s head. We would encourage everyone in our wonderful Civil Service community to notice the people around them and to start conversations when they are needed. This is what community is all about and such conversations really do save lives.

Did you know, someone takes their own life in the UK roughly every 75 minutes? These are all preventable deaths. Most people who have survived suicide say that they are glad that they didn’t die when they made the attempt.

If you are having thoughts of suicide or you are feeling that you just don’t want to be around anymore, please reach out as soon as you notice this.

If you have been affected by someone else’s death by suicide and would benefit from support, please reach out.

The Charity’s Wellbeing Service can offer you a supportive conversation where we listen without judgement and help you access the support you need. Life does not have to be like this for ever.

Please note that if you feel concerned about your safety or the safety of someone else, we are not an emergency service and you should contact one of the organisations listed on our website.
