It’s been a real pleasure to take part in the Mega Miles Challenge this month alongside colleagues – and of course with the dog – come rain or shine (and there’s certainly been more of the former). When the Charity for Civil Servants spoke directly to our staff, we made a commitment to show up, get involved and demonstrate what it means to connect, support and make a difference for one another when it’s needed most.
Senior leadership helps keep Mega Miles momentum going into July
Dr Andrew Goodall, Permanent Secretary for the Welsh Government Civil Service, took part in this year’s Mega Miles Challenge during June, showing visible leadership, personal commitment and the strength of the civil service community in action.
Walking in all weathers, Andrew completed 105 miles in support of the Charity for Civil Servants, helping to raise awareness and vital funds so no civil servant faces life’s challenges alone.
His support comes as colleagues across the UK build on a month of Mega Miles activity, with walks, runs, rides, team challenges and fundraising events taking place across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
And the good news is, it does not have to stop when June ends.
Mega Miles Challenge invites civil servants, teams, departments, friends and families to move in whatever way works for them. Whether it is a lunchtime walk, a team challenge, a bake sale, a sports event or something entirely different, every activity helps raise funds so civil servants, former civil servants and their dependants can access free, confidential support when they need it most.
Andrew’s involvement is a strong reminder of the difference visible leadership can make. By taking part and sharing his journey, he helped build momentum behind the challenge and encouraged others across the civil service community to get involved.
Dr Andrew Goodall said:
I’ve walked far more miles than I expected, and I’ve genuinely enjoyed the fresh air, the headspace and the weekly challenges I set myself. But more importantly, I’ve been reminded of the power of small, consistent actions. This challenge isn’t just about steps – it’s about solidarity. The charity makes a real difference to individuals across the Civil Service, often at the moments when help matters most, and I’m proud to support that work.
His participation reflects the wider spirit of Mega Miles Challenge: colleagues coming together, taking on personal goals, supporting one another and helping the Charity be there for people when life gets tricky.
As Mega Miles momentum continues into July, the Charity is encouraging more colleagues, teams and senior leaders across the UK Civil Service to take part, share their stories and help raise awareness of the support available to civil servants, former civil servants and their families.
Whether you take inspiration from Andrew’s challenge, gather colleagues for a team activity or find your own way to get moving, every mile and every activity helps make a difference.
Take part in Mega Miles Challenge and help ensure no civil servant faces life’s challenges alone.
