CSIS Charity Fund supporting civil servants for generations

Recognising the long-standing partnership between the Charity and CSIS

As we mark 140 years of supporting civil servants, it is also a moment to recognise the partnerships that have helped sustain that support over time.

One of the most significant is our long-standing relationship with the Civil Service Insurance Society (CSIS) and the Civil Service Insurance Society (CSIS) Charity Fund, rooted in a shared belief that civil servants should be able to rely on one another, not just in their work, but in life too.

Jonathan Freeman MBE, DL, CEO of the Charity for Civil Servants, said:

As we mark 140 years of supporting civil servants and their families, partnerships like the one we share with the Civil Service Insurance Society are a powerful reminder of what it means to be there for one another. Through the CSIS Charity Fund, civil servants have been supported across generations, helping ensure that no one has to face life’s challenges alone. This long-standing partnership continues to play a vital role in enabling us to provide financial, practical and emotional support when life gets tricky.

A legacy of civil servants supporting civil servants

The origins of CSIS date back to 1890, when civil servants came together to create a more secure future for their colleagues and their families. What began as a practical solution to protect widows and orphans grew into a lasting model of collective support.

From the outset, the principle was simple yet powerful: by working together, civil servants could provide both protection and support for one another, particularly in times of financial hardship or uncertainty.

Turning contribution into impact

For generations, civil servants have taken out insurance through CSIS. These contributions have not only provided protection for individuals and their families, but also helped fund wider support through the CSIS Charity Fund.

Over time, this has resulted in millions of pounds being donated to causes that support civil and public servants and their families, including the Charity for Civil Servants. In the last 17 years alone, the CSIS Charity Fund has donated some £12.5 million to deserving causes.

This funding helps us continue to provide financial, practical and emotional support when life gets tricky, ensuring that no one has to face life’s challenges alone.

Debbie Terry, Chair of the CSIS Charity Fund Trustee Board, said:

Our longstanding relationship with the Charity for Civil Servants is of huge importance to us, since we know the funds we’re able to donate are always well-used to help those in most need.

A partnership built on shared purpose

This partnership is built on shared purpose, trust and a deep understanding of the Civil Service community.

It reflects a long-standing culture of mutual support, where colleagues look out for one another across generations. The impact is not only financial, but deeply human, helping people through some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

Looking ahead

As we look to the future, that same spirit of shared responsibility and community remains as important as ever.

Partnerships like this continue to play a vital role in helping us be there for civil servants and their families, now and for generations to come.

We would like to thank everyone at CSIS and the CSIS Charity Fund, past and present, for the role they have played in supporting civil servants over many years.
