I trained to become a tax inspector and really enjoyed it. I moved around a bit, working mainly in Edinburgh, London and Glasgow primarily focusing on insurance companies including a spell as Head Office Specialist in that area. I also did a secondment at the Scottish Government on health policy which was really interesting… and my last job within the Civil Service was helping to set up Revenue Scotland, the new devolved tax authority.
Colin's story
Colin started his career as an academic. As a graduate with a PhD in physics, he had a successful career at Dundee and Glasgow Universities specialising in the mysteries of electron microscopy. But this was just the start of his journey. The Inland Revenue (since merged with Customs and Excise to form HMRC), was advertising for people with a scientific, analytical background – perfect for Colin. He took a leap of faith and became a civil servant.
Colin has always been passionate about supporting charities and regards Charity for Civil Servants as close to his heart.
I donate to a few charities but I’ve donated to the Charity for Civil Servants for the longest time. The Civil Service has always been worthwhile in my eyes and therefore the people who make up the Civil Service are worthwhile. If we’re not going to support our own charity, then who will?
After a lifetime of dedicating his life to public service, Colin is now retired. But every single day he’s continuing to make a difference to his community. From volunteering as a dog walker to playing the timpani in his local symphony orchestra, Colin is as busy as ever. Demonstrating the powerful link between physics and music in every chapter of his life.
I also love travelling to London to see operas, theatre productions, art exhibitions, the proms, things like that. When I first retired, I worried I’d have too much time on my hands. Now I don’t know how I ever had time to work!
Leaving a legacy
We’re incredibly grateful to Colin for pledging a gift to us in his Will. He will be forever part of our umbrella, supporting civil servants and their families through the rainiest of days.
The people have always been the highlight of my time in the Civil Service. There was always a great team spirit, especially when the job was challenging. Civil servants work hard to help the country, why shouldn’t they be looked after too? It’s important to me now and it will remain important when I’m gone. That’s why I’m pledging a gift in my Will.
